E-cigarettes and your pets

With vaping fast becoming the preferred way of enjoying nicotine, it is only natural that we consider the effects not only on those around us but also on our pets. Just as harmful tobacco smoke can affect people, it can also affect pets; therefore, switching to vaping is certainly going to make a difference in numerous ways to both you and your animals.

Studies have proven that vaping has little effect on air quality and that only the most minuscule of changes has been recorded when e-cigarettes have been used in an enclosed space. As e-liquid is generally made up of propylene glycol or vegetable glycerine, both of which are commonly found in food products and are used as flavouring in products such as toothpaste, it is easy to see why it would have little to no negative impact on air quality. This means the air you and your pets are breathing in is less polluted than if nicotine cigarettes were being smoked, which can only be a positive.

Potential dangers

As with any electrical device, it is best to keep it out of the way of a curious dog. Just like a smartphone, tablet, or any other electrical device that could be a danger if chewed, especially when plugged in, an e-cigarette is the same.

Common sense should prevail and your e-cigarette should always be kept away from your dog when it is charging. Cats, of course, are less inclined to chew; however, make sure that wherever you keep your device, it can’t be knocked over, or off a table, as this could cause damage.

Nicotine risks

The biggest concern regarding pets and e-cigarettes is that nicotine in concentration or in quantity is poisonous. Cartridges and e-liquids should be kept well out of the way of cats, dogs, rabbits and any other pets, as they can cause poisoning if ingested. This could be fatal.

In addition to nicotine being potentially lethal if ingested, it can cause gastrointestinal upsets or oral injury. If a cartridge is actually swallowed, it can cause a blockage that may require invasive surgery. The smell of the e-liquid may make your electronic cigarette more appealing to your pet; therefore, it is always best to exercise caution and ensure your device is nowhere within reach.

Owning a pet comes with responsibility; however, your e-cigarette does not have to pose any sort of danger to your animals. If you are aware of the risks, you can act accordingly and ensure that accidents are avoided completely.
